Convert Documents to Markdown with AnyDoc
AI tools work best when they can read clean text. Real work, unfortunately, arrives as Word documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, PDFs, ebooks, and CSV files.
AnyDoc provides a local conversion tool and libraries for turning common document formats into Markdown. That creates a useful translation boundary between office files and text-oriented agent workflows.
Why convert to Markdown?
Section titled “Why convert to Markdown?”Markdown is easier to search, diff, quote, review, and pass to language models than a binary office format. A converted document can be:
- summarized or analyzed by an agent;
- checked into a review workflow;
- linked from an Obsidian vault;
- split into retrieval chunks; or
- compared with a later version.
The conversion is an intermediate representation, not a replacement for the original. Keep the source file when layout, signatures, formulas, comments, or exact pagination matter.
A safe conversion workflow
Section titled “A safe conversion workflow”- Identify the document’s sensitivity and authoritative owner.
- Keep the original unchanged.
- Run AnyDoc on a trusted machine using the current official instructions.
- Review the resulting Markdown for missing tables, headings, images, notes, or reading order.
- Use the Markdown for analysis while linking back to the source.
- Delete temporary output when retention is unnecessary.
This review step matters. Office formats can contain floating objects, speaker notes, hidden worksheets, formulas, tracked changes, and complex layouts that do not map cleanly to linear text.
Local does not answer every privacy question
Section titled “Local does not answer every privacy question”The downloaded AnyDoc converter uses local Rust-based processing for supported formats. That can keep the document on the machine during conversion.
The full workflow may still cross a boundary if:
- the result is sent to a hosted model;
- files live in cloud-synchronized storage;
- a separate hosted OCR or parsing service is selected;
- temporary files or logs are retained; or
- an agent uploads the output to another tool.
Classify the document before conversion and follow its allowed data path after conversion.
Where it fits
Section titled “Where it fits”AnyDoc is a translator, not a knowledge base and not a model. A practical pipeline looks like this:
Office file -> AnyDoc -> reviewed Markdown -> search, notes, or AI analysisThat separation is useful. If extraction is wrong, you can fix or replace that step without changing the model or knowledge system.
Caveats
Section titled “Caveats”- OCR quality depends on the selected workflow and the quality of scanned material.
- Spreadsheet formulas and formatting may not survive as executable behavior.
- Slide order does not always represent the intended spoken narrative.
- PDF text order can be ambiguous, especially with columns and complex layouts.
- Embedded media may require separate extraction and review.
For high-stakes documents, compare the output with the rendered original. A fluent summary of a bad extraction is still a bad result.
