Add Private Metasearch with SearXNG
AI agents need current information, but sending every search directly to one provider creates a narrow and often opaque discovery path. SearXNG is a self-hostable metasearch engine that sends queries to configured search services and combines their results.
A metasearch engine aggregates other search sources. SearXNG does not maintain a complete independent index of the public web.
Why use it?
Section titled “Why use it?”SearXNG gives an operator control over:
- enabled search engines and specialist sources;
- result categories and languages;
- user preferences and plugins;
- access to machine-readable result formats; and
- where the aggregation service runs.
People can use it as a browser search engine. Applications and agents can use structured results as a discovery step before retrieving original pages.
What privacy it provides
Section titled “What privacy it provides”With a private instance, upstream search providers generally see requests from the SearXNG server rather than a direct connection from each user’s browser. The operator can also avoid adding advertising profiles and choose what to log.
That does not make the search entirely local. Queries still go to enabled upstream services. The trust boundary includes the SearXNG host, its administrator, reverse proxies, DNS and network providers, logs, supporting data stores, and connected clients.
A public community instance adds another operator to that boundary. It may also disable engines, limit requests, or change configuration without notice.
Use SearXNG as discovery, not evidence
Section titled “Use SearXNG as discovery, not evidence”Search snippets are leads. They are not authoritative sources.
A reliable agent research loop is:
- search for candidate sources;
- prefer primary documentation or original reporting;
- open the underlying page;
- inspect the relevant content;
- compare sources when the claim is contested or time-sensitive; and
- cite the original page, not the search result.
SearXNG improves breadth and control. It does not guarantee accuracy or neutral ranking.
Operating an instance
Section titled “Operating an instance”Follow the official administrator documentation and use a production deployment pattern. Protect the instance secret, configure transport security, and review proxy headers so limiting logic sees the intended client identity.
Automation can generate enough requests to overload a small instance or trigger upstream anti-bot systems. Enable only useful engines, set reasonable limits, and monitor individual engine failures and CAPTCHA responses.
Machine-readable output is configuration-dependent. Do not assume a public instance exposes the format an agent integration requires.
Where it fits in an AI stack
Section titled “Where it fits in an AI stack”SearXNG discovers URLs. A page extractor retrieves readable content. A model analyzes it. A knowledge system preserves durable conclusions.
Keeping those roles separate makes failures easier to diagnose. If a model cites a bad source, you can inspect the search and retrieval steps rather than treating “web access” as one mysterious feature.
